Really enjoyed the book and loved the story line but was disappointing near the ending when everything became rushed to a conclusion for the book for the first three quarters of the book you enjoy it as you follow their lives then everything is crammed into a few paragraphs from what normally happened in a few pages people changing at every twist and turn. This book is an amazing story of a distant world that is so imaginative but continues to parallel our own complex world and history. The characters are really complex and compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and each time I reluntantly had to put it down, I found myself rushing back to continue enjoying my time with Rhen as soon as I could.
This had so many emotional ups and downs! It was hard to put down because I wanted to know how it would end!!
At the start of Rhen I was trying to guess what might happen based on other similar fiction, but as it developed I was surprised and impressed with the quality of the story from this new author. This is a great book for young adults and "older" adults who enjoy sci-fi and fantasy, but the story is also human on many levels. It's a little long for my short attention span ;-) but I was held interested throughout.
Not usually a fan of the fantasy genre but this novel was highly recommended so gave it a shot. Took me about 40 pages to start to get involved with the characters. There was a lot of details and information the author wanted to put out there, but once I started to get the flow I was hooked. The story line was engaging, the characters well developed, and there were surprises and twists and turns. Really took me away and I can't wait for the next one!!! Really enjoyed, a great read!
I loved this book. While it took me a few chapters to get enmeshed in the story, Ms. Kelly paints a colorful picture of faraway worlds and weaves a compelling story that leaves you wanting to read on. The characters were fun to love and hate, loved that there was a little tantalizing saucy teenage issues to keep it interesting and enjoyed the mystical themes and ideas. An enjoyable book to read that held my attention and kept me wanting more. The story leaves you hanging at the end and I hope there is more to come.
Imaginative, strong characters in a rapidly moving story. This book takes a bit of getting into, but it is worth the effort. The main character is an emerging boy/man. Constantly supported by the girl and women in his life, it gives a sustained viability to the book some fantasy books lack. Humor, sex, wild rides, and magic add up to a very good read.
Great book! Young Rhen is brainwashed into embracing his adoptive family’s male-dominated, militaristic society (Surpen), but after his wife convinces him to go to the top school where his birth family lives, he begins to accept Thestran’s more liberal attitudes. His love for his father keeps you guessing on which family he’ll embrace…his birth family or the family that raised him. I loved Rhen’s hidden powers and the fact that his biological mother kept dismissing them, because she was too selfish to believe anyone but herself could have multiple powers. You could totally hear the evil advisor’s snickering, as he floated invisibly around the Thestrans.
The characters are very inventive, from Rhen’s friend, whose race doesn’t grow until they turn 18, to the Queen of Ventar, who’s powers over love made anyone near her pass out. The Black Angel was a nice touch!
Looking forward to the second book. Can’t wait to find out what happens to Rhen and his friends. Do they sell Black Angel Club t-shirts?
